Hitchy the Cat

May-13-2007 By MissDanni

It was a cold, windy afternoon in January..

I had been out with my family and we were just about home when this cat jumped out of the ditch and ran out in front of me. I quickly tried to avoid the cat and stopped the car.

My children were in the backseat asking what had happened but I didn’t want to answer them. Adam looked over at me as much to say that he saw the cat and knew exactly what had happened.

Adam attempted to calm the children and I got out to see if the cat was ok or if I had indeed hit it. I walked around the front of the car examining the snow for any blood but I didn’t see anything. I went around the side and finally the back of the car and then I saw her. Huddled beneath the tail pipe trying to get warm in the exhaust of the car was Hitchy.

Hitchy was a faded gray calico tabby. I quickly reached out to her to see if she was hurt. She welcomed my touch and I took her up in my arms. She was matted and frost bitten and had a terrible cough; obviously abandoned. She nuzzled into my jacket trying desperatly to get warm from the bitter winter wind.

Hitchy came home with us where we treated her injuries and her illness.

For the first week she wouldn’t let me put her down without growling in fear of being left alone. It took her sometime to warm up to the rest of the family but in time she did. She became a permanent member of the family and fit in nicely.

We were very lucky that she wasn’t killed that day, and we were so very blessed to have such a loving cat in our home.

Hitchy was never really happy until she became a mother. She had 4 of her own and adopted 2 other kittens that were born and the mother had disappeared. Had we not found Hitchy that cold winter afternoon, she would never have been able to adopt the 2 kittens and they would have most likely died.

Everything happens for a reason.
